Introduction

Here you can find definitions to the terminology used in the algorithms on this website. The notation described here is based on David Singmaster's notation, and is the most widely used notation for describing moves on Rubik's Cube.

Suffixes
If there is no symbol added to the end of a letter which describes a face turn or cube rotation, it means that you must turn that face or rotate the cube through 90º clockwise. Example: U means turn the Upper layer clockwise through 90º.
The symbol ' is added to the end of the letter used to describe a face turn or cube rotation, to indicate that the face is to be turned or the cube rotated anticlockwise through 90º. Example: U' means turn the Upper layer anticlockwise through 90º.
The symbol 2 is added to the end of the letter used to describe a face turn or cube rotation, when the face is to be turned or cube rotated through 180º in a clockwise direction. Example: U2 means turn the Upper layer through 180º in a clockwise direction.
The symbol 2' is added to the end of the letter used to describe a face turn, when the face is to be turned through 180º in an anticlockwise direction. Example: U2' means turn the Upper layer through 180º in an anticlockwise direction.
The symbol * represents the multiplicity of a set of moves, contained within brackets Example: (R U R' U')*5 means repeat the algorithm R U R' U' 5 times
